νηὸς ἁλιστρέπτου πλαγκτὸν κύτος εἶδεν ἐπ᾽ ἀκτῆς
μηλοβότης, βλοσυροῖς κύμασι συρόμενον,
χεῖρα δ᾽ ἐπέρριψεν: τὸ δ᾽ ἐπεσπάσατ᾽ ἐς βυθὸν ἅλμης
τὸν σῴζονθ᾽ οὕτως πᾶσιν ἀπηχθάνετο:ναυηγὸν δ᾽ ὁ νομεὺς ἔσχεν μόρον. ὢ δι᾽ ἐκείνην

καὶ δρυμοὶ χῆροι πορθμίδα καὶ λιμένες.
A shepherd saw the straying hull of a sea-tost boat carried along shore by the fierce waves. He seized it with his hand, and it dragged its saviour into the deep sea, so bitter was its hatred of all mankind. Thus the shepherd met with the fate of a shipwrecked mariner. Alas! both the woods and the harbour are put in mourning by that boat.

一位牧羊人看到一艘被汹涌的海浪沿拖着的海上漂流船的残骸。他伸手抓住它，但残骸却将它的救世主拖入深海。它对全人类的仇恨是那么的强烈！就这样，牧羊人遭遇了与一位遇难水手等同的悲惨命运。唉!树林和港口都为那艘船哀悼。
