Texts

τῶν παίδων Ἀΐδην οὐδὲ θεοῖς δύναμις ;

— Paton edition

Robora non, Orpheu, posthac annosa movebis,
Non rigidas cautes, non sine lege feras.
Nec cessare dabis ventos, et grandinis imbrem,
Densatasque nives, horrisonumque mare.
Raptus morte jaces: Musarum te chorus omnis
Flevit, et ante alias Calliopea parens.
Nostra quid, o homines, lugemus pignora, quando
Non possunt mortem Di prohibere suis?

Comment

#1
  2. (κοιμάσεις) Per l'uso traslato del verbo, cfr. "Iliade", XII, 281; "Odissea", XII, 169.
  3. (νιφετῶν συρμούς) L'immagine ricorre in VI, 221, 1 (Leonida).
  4. (παταγεῦσαν ἅλα) In analoga iunctura il verbo è attestato in Teocrito, 22, 15.
  5. (Καλλιόπα) Cfr. 9, 2; ovvero Polimnia, secondo un'altra tradizione. (Conca-Marzi-Zanetto 2005)

τῶν παίδων Ἀΐδην οὐδὲ θεοῖς δύναμις ;

No more , Orpheus , shall you lead the charmed
oaks and rocks and the shepherdless herds of wild
beasts . No more shall you lull to sleep the howling
winds and the hail , and the drifting snow , and
the roaring sea . For dead you are ; and the
daughters of Mnemosyne bewailed you much , and
before all your mother Calliope . Why sigh we for
our dead sons , when not even the gods have power
to protect their children from death ?
