— Paton edition
— Waltz edition
Ancient Sardis, home of my fathers, had I been
— Paton edition
reared in thee I would have been a cernus-bearer or
eunuch, wearing ornaments of gold and beating-
pretty tambourines ; but now my name is Alcman,
and I am a citizen of Sparta of the many tripods,
and have learnt to know the Heliconian Muses who
made me greater than the tyrants Dascyles and
Gyges.
