μνῆμα τόδε κλεινοῖο Μεγιστίου, ὅν ποτε Μῆδοι
Σπερχειὸν ποταμὸν κτεῖναν ἀμειψάμενοι,
μάντιος, ὃς τότε κῆρας ἐπερχομένας σάφα εἰδὼς
οὐκ ἔτλη Σπάρτης ἡγεμόνας προλιπεῖν.
This is the tomb of famous Megistias the prophet, whom the Persians slew after crossing the Spercheius. Though he well knew then the impending fate, he disdained to desert the Spartan leaders.

Voici le monument de l'illustre Mégistias, que jadis les Mèdes tuèrent, après avoir franchi le cours du Sperchios. Ce devin, qui alors avait de l'arrivée des Kères la claire connaissance, ne put se résoudre à abandonner les chefs de Sparte.
