Πέτρος ἐγὼ τὸ πάλαι γυρὴ καὶ ἄτριπτος ἐπιβλὴς

τὴν Ἡρακλείτου ἔνδον ἔχω κεφαλὴν
αἰών μ᾽ ἔτριψεν κροκάλαις ἴσον ἐν γὰρ ἀμάξῃ
παμφόρῳ αἰζηῶν εἰνοδίη τέταμαι.
ἀγγέλλω δὲ βροτοῖσι, καὶ ἄστηλός περ ἐοῦσα,
θεῖον ὑλακτητὴν δήμου ἔχουσα κύνα.
Moi, jadis pierre ronde et rugueuse qui surmontait son tombeau, je renferme en mon creux la tête d'Héraclite. Le temps m'a usée à la façon des galets; car je suis exposé, en pleine route, aux chariots de transport des hommes. Mais j'annonce aux mortels, bien que je manque de stèle, que je possède le chien divin qui aboyait après le peuple.
