αὐτὸς δ᾽ ἀτμήτοιο κόμας ἀπεθήκατο δάφνας
Φοῖβος, ἑὸν τιμῶν ᾗ θέμις ὑμνοπόλον
Μοῦσαι δ᾽ ἐκλαύσαντο: ῥόον δ᾽ ἔστησεν ἀκούων
Ἀσωπὸς γοερῶν ἦχον ἀπὸ στομάτων
ἔλληξεν δὲ μέλαθρα Διωνύσοιο χορείης,
εὖτε σιδηρείην οἶμον ἔβης Ἀίδεω.

off the laurels from his flowing locks, honouring his
singer as is meet. The Muses wept and Asopus
stayed his stream when he heard the voice of
mourning. The dance of Dionysus ceased in the
halls, when thou didst go down the iron road of
Hades.
Tutta sulla tua morte la Grecia, Pilade, gème, scomposti crini alla radice rade. Anche Apollo le chiome d'intonso alloro depose, recando al suo cantore il giusto onore. Piansero insieme le Muse, fermò la corrente l'Asopo, delle flebili bocche udendo il suono, e nelle sale di Bacco le danze cessarono, quando prendesti la ferrigna via dell'Ade.
