Te sfigurò, sventurato Nicànore, l'onda canuta,
e nudo giaci su stranieri lidi
o sulle rocce. Sparita la casa opulenta, perduta
ogni speranza della patria Tiro.
E la ricchezza a nulla ti valse. Che pena! Peristi.
Ti travagliasti per i pesci e il mare.

Unhappy Nicanor , wasted by the grey sea , thou liest naked on a strange beach or perchance near the rocks ; gone from thee are thy rich halls , and the hope of all Tyre has perished . None of thy possessions saved thee ; alas , poor wight , thou are dead and hast laboured but for the fishes and the sea .
