οὐδὲ Νότος, πρὸ Νότου δ᾽ ὤλετο καὶ πελάγευς.
ἤδη γάρ μιν ἅπασαν ἐπὶ ζυγὰ γομφωθεῖσαν
ἤλειφον πεύκης τῇ λιπαρῇ νοτίδι:πίσσα δ᾽ ὑπερβρασθεῖσα πυρὸς φλογὶ τὴν ἁλὶ πιστὴν

τευχομένην γαίῃ δεῖξεν ἀπιστοτέρην.
Notre navire, ce ne sont pas les profondeurs qui l'ont englouti. Quelles profondeurs? Il n'a jamais navigué! Ce n'est pas non plus le Notus qui l'a saisi: il a péri avant de rencontrer le vent et la haute mer! Déjà on l'avait chevillé jusqu'à la hauteur des barrots, et on l'oignait du suc onctueux des pinèdes. Mais, la poix bouillonnant sous la flamme en a fait la preuve: pour ce vaisseau, notre espoir sur mer, plus le moindre espoir, sur terre.
